main points

Writing Style
I loved the writing. It was so simple but light and fun. It also had a slightly foreign feel to it, like the narrator didn’t speak English as his/her first language. It was charming.
Content
This story was full of adventure! It was nonstop action, twists and turns everywhere. It was somewhat easy to predict in some aspects, but almost impossible in others. It was definitely a fast read. It was not so much about history and WWII, but more about Colette’s relationships with others. The main theme seemed to be interracial relationships in the mid 1900s. I also found it quite amusing that she was a Frenchwoman practicing Chinese medicine in America.
Characters
Colette: She had a lot of development. She started off as a simple naive schoolgirl falling for an American, but by the end she could hold her own and grew in character. She was probably one of the characters with the most development I’ve seen in one book (not a series). And it was a smooth transition, too. She was Colette all the way through.
Adam: The typical guy who is a sweetheart at first but lacks commitment. Not evil, but not a nice guy.
John: He was so nice! He was the perfect guy all the way through. His biggest (and perhaps only) flaw is that he seems to always think Colette needs protecting, when she is quite capable of looking after herself.
Ending
A nice fairy tale happy ending. But room for a sequel! I hope there is one. I would read it right away.

Good vs. Bad

Good:

  • Plot
  • Characters
  • historical setting
  • adventure!
  • pacing
  • writing style
Less than perfect:
  • too short! Hope for a sequel!

Bottom Line

This book was a fun, quick read. A perfect fairy tale. The heroine is a perfect mix of sweet and badass. The plot is very fast-paced and full of adventure. It was hard to put down. Would I read more by this author? Definitely. Would I recommend this book to others? Of course!
