Letters to Characters #3: Alice from The Truth About Alice

Posted February 7, 2015 in letters to characters / 3 Comments

In this feature, we write letters to characters. They can be about anything, really. I kind of had the idea that if we didn’t like something they did in their book/series, we could yell at them about it or suggest something they should have done, or give advice some other way, or just gush about how awesome they are.  And also- these don’t have to be book characters; they can be movie characters, TV show characters, webcomic characters, manga characters, whatever.

Welcome to LTC3!

~Dear Alice~

Alice, I consider you very lucky. And very unusual in your situation. You see, a lot of the time when a girl is blamed for scandalous things, she is actually a very innocent girl who wouldn’t do them.

But in your case, there is a reason for labeling you as a ‘slut.’ You don’t pretend you’re not promiscuous. You are in fact the type of girl to have had several boyfriends, start dating at a young age, and do things you may regret with guys. So when these rumors about you start circulating, it can hardly be a surprise that so many people are willing to believe them. And after all, who is there to stick up for you? Certainly not Kurt.

Did I mention that I thought you were lucky? Well, here’s why. I think that your past prepared you to face the rumors. It made you a stronger person. Sure, you sort of hid, and became generally an angry person, but you didn’t do anything drastic. Unlike Hannah Baker (Thirteen Reasons Why), you didn’t kill yourself. And I think part of the reason she did was because she was an innocent person. She would never do those sort of things. So she couldn’t handle the rumors.

But you could, and you did. You rode them out. And like rumors tend to do, they began to fade. Or at least appeared like they would. Even if you could never disprove them, you didn’t let the rumors control you. So you were lucky, and strong.

I’m not saying I think you’re the most wonderful of people. I’m not even saying we would be friends. But somehow, your promiscuity gave you an edge, the edge you needed to overcome. And for that I applaud you.
