Meet Ginger Pye, the smartest dog you'll ever know. Jerry Pye and his sister, Rachel, feel pretty smart themselves for buying Ginger. It was the best dollar they ever spent. Ginger steals everybody's heart . . . until someone steals him!

Main points

This is such a fun book, but it’s very sad, too. The writing is wonderful. It’s got that charm that children love to read. The interesting bit is that there are a lot of difficult words that even I would not have known reading it as a kid- some I learned as recently as last year. I’m sure I skipped over them the first time reading.

The story is a good one. There’s the main plot of the dog, but there are a lot of other anecdotes that round it out and help you get to know the characters.

Ginger really is a special dog. It’s so sad what happens to him- especially when you realize there were so many chances where they could have rescued him, but didn’t know- and also how they missed that growing-up period of his life when he goes from puppy to adult. It’s depressing. But the mystery itself is a good one.

All in all this is a really fun, bittersweet story. I loved it.
