Three wishes. Two lovers. One destiny.

When the snarky Glory St. Pierre discovers the gold mechanical vase in her deceased grandmother’s basement, she has no idea that she has uncovered a priceless treasure: a genie lamp. With a real genie inside. A very sexy genie with a not-so-sexy grudge against the entire human race.

Irving Amir hates being called a genie. He’s a Djinn, and he is none too happy to be in the service of Glory, who is as intolerable, and beautiful, as humans come. Now he owes her his gratitude for freeing him and three wishes. Damn his luck.

But an arrow through the shoulder alerts Irving to the fact that he is being hunted, and after a truce dinner with Glory ends with them both almost being killed, hating each other goes right out the window. As feelings change and love starts to develop, they must dig through the secrets and lies to find the truth...a truth neither of them will ever see coming.

Main points

WOW! I LOVED it. Of course, I didn’t expect anything different, but this book made it 100% for sure that Diantha Jones is one of my favorite authors and can do no wrong. I still want to read ALL of her books. Just about 200% more now.

Okay okay okay let’s get down to it. This story was so deliciously steampunk—and, well, steamy. Not gonna lie. It’s beautiful. There are all kinds of jokes as well—clean as well as dirty. I appreciated that we didn’t get right into the skin-on-skin action early on—we were able to wait until a more respectable time. Excruciating, yes, but that only makes it more worth it.

Now I have to rave about the characters. Glory was top notch. 99.8% snark and the rest is fierce love. My kinda girl. Pretty much anything she said was snarky and hilarious or intelligent and clever. She was always surprising me and I loved it. And of course Irving was pretty cool too. I loved how he never lied (well, rarely) and things that would be complicated to humans were simple to him. It made a lot of things easier. I don’t really get into the mind game junk so much. And man, do I really need to go into how hot he is? He is a classic A. Star creation. Pure deliciousness with a cherry on top.

Whew, and don’t even get me started on the plot. So spicy!! What I probably love most about Diantha’s writing is that even in a short number of pages (this book is only 155!) she manages to create this AMAZINGLY detailed plot and world while keeping the romance and characters high quality. That’s what makes me keep coming back for more and basically any series she writes will be a keeper for me on my fantasy shelf. This one is no exception. GREAT setting/world building and there were SO MANY beautiful plot twists that I would NEVER have guessed but yet didn’t come out of nowhere. The big one at the end connected to the very beginning and even though I wouldn’t have guessed it, it still made total sense. Like wow. Talk about keeping you on your toes! And of course that makes you want to immediately go on to the next book.

Hmm, let’s talk about the other aspects of the book so this review seems less rave-y and more well-rounded. Pacing was great. The ending was a super fun cliffhanger. There weren’t quite as many steamy scenes as I was expecting but we have a whole series for that, thank goodness. The real-life parts of the book were just as realistic as the fantasy parts were fantastic. Overall, it was definitely an engaging book that was very easy to read in one sitting and hard to put down. A+ and I will be coming back for more. If you look at the rating report below, those are probably the highest marks I have given a 5-star book in a long time.

Great review, Alicia! I love short books but sometimes they can feel a bit under developed so I’m glad to hear this one is not the case! It sounds like a great read! :)

The cover looks great. I like Djinns, and I enjoyed “Lover, Divine”, the previous book by this author, so I’ll have to check it out.
