Medical Emancipation & Other Issues (essay inspired by My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult)

Medical Emancipation & Other Issues (essay inspired by My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult)

This essay will be my thoughts and opinions on certain concepts presented in Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. These issues include one similar to that of “designer babies,” medical emancipation, and how far the human right to life goes. I understand these issues are controversial. You do not have to keep reading if you do not wish to. I expect all debate over this to be polite, considerate, and calm. Thank you! So I just finished reading My Sister’s Keeper, and it’s funny because it reminded me so exactly of an issue we just covered […]

Main points I loved this book. I love all of Jodi Picoult’s books. They’re very well-researched and this one is no exception. Lots of medical terminology and some legal stuff. I also love the alternating POVs and found it interesting that we only heard Sara’s present-day POV in the end. A little disappointing, but not too much. I was honestly a bit confused on a few parts. The point of the book, the actual issue at hand (which I was right to be confused about), and Anna especially. I don’t think she ever admitted in […]

Main points WHERE IS THE SECOND BOOK. I NEED IT NOW. Wow, this book is definitely one of my favorites so far this year. It’s beautifully written and edited. (I swear, I only found a single typo.) It was very emotional and conflicted. And the plot twists were beautiful. The synopsis gives you just the basics. There’s a competition. It’s a brutal one. What it doesn’t tell you is that things are more complicated than that, especially with feelings involved. But you could probably tell that, right? Sinclair was deliciously hard to pin down. He […]

Main points This book was very trippy. It felt like one long nightmare. (Not as in reading it, but because of the plot.) Honestly, that’s the best way to describe it. Some parts were confusing because we weren’t given all the details. Most came to light later, but I still thought the ending was confusing. It wasn’t an epic, violent cliffhanger, but the adventure was far from over. So the gist is that they have to face these “six” challenges. (There were actually eight, for Nora and Aidan at least.) A few are based on […]

2016 Love-a-thon Tea Party mini challenge

It’s Tea Time. So what would my ultimate tea party look like? Well, obviously the Mad Hatter would have to be present, because no proper tea party would be complete without him. And Alice, for contrast. Need a balance. I mean, anyone from Wonderland would be welcome. I would also invite my blog bestie Jillie from Jillian’s Books. As for authors, I might invite Kristin Cashore, author of my favorite series (The Graceling Realm series), and Kate DiCamillo, author of The Tale of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie among other books. Her children’s books have such […]

A great and terrible beauty.        Since you’ve been gone, I’ve had a change of heart. I am a killer. And I have thirteen reasons why.        Take the golden compass into the forest of secrets. Main points This book was brutal. In just about every respect. It’s good, but it’s harsh. Grating on the emotions. And a page-turner, for sure. The plot changes every few pages, it seems. It’s never quite clear what the end goal is, because I think that changes a few times as well, but there’s always some short-term immediate goal. Usually escaping. Not getting killed. The usual. It’s gripping. It’s also savage. It’s a harsh world. Well, most of it. Everyone’s grown up paranoid and ready to attack. There’s a lot of bloodshed and cruelty. Anyone […]
