happy birthday to me!

happy birthday to me!

Howdy everyone! It’s my birthday! I honestly don’t remember if I’ve ever revealed my age on here. I don’t think I have. In any case, today’s birthday is a milestone, although not one I personally will be making a big deal about. (Or rather, celebrating as it’s meant to be celebrated.) But I am at the age where birthdays are really just like normal days. Living alone, I don’t even make it special by making pancakes or anything! Who has that kind of time in the morning? I can’t even leave myself enough time to scramble eggs […]

The Care and Feeding of Sprites by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Care and Feeding of Sprites by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Main points This book is sooo cute! It really makes me want a sprite as a pet. It’s really frustrating, honestly—this book is just teasing me! Here’s how to take care of a mythical creature, in great detail! But again, it goes into great detail about them as a species, even more than the series and the Guide. Like I said, I think other faeries should have their own books as well. What’s funny is that the book also talks about people who keep goblins as pets, and that’s just ridiculous. I can’t fathom it. […]

Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Main points I love the Guide. It is much more detailed than the books, obviously, and includes many creatures that the books don’t mention but are found elsewhere in folklore. The illustrations are beautiful, of course, and there are many two-page spreads for larger illustrations. They are very detailed and beautifully-coloured. I like how Arthur provides many examples of a lot of the faeries, based on several observances. So while we may think of Mulgarath as the main ogre, there were illustrations of others that were even more interesting, because there was more backstory. And […]

The Chronicles of Spiderwick: A Grand Tour of the Enchanted World, Navigated by Thimbletack by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Chronicles of Spiderwick: A Grand Tour of the Enchanted World, Navigated by Thimbletack by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Main points This book is a really cute scrapbook. I say “cute” but it does delve into the darker aspects of the story, such as the tragic accidents that happen to people because of faeries and the aftermath of Arthur’s disappearance. It also goes into Helen and Richard’s divorce and Jared’s suspensions and expulsions. It’s mostly a gathering of Arthur’s notes and drawings, newspaper clippings, letters, emails, old pictures, and Thimbletack’s little notes commenting on each category. There are several fun flaps to open and pockets in which to find things, like smaller booklets. There […]

Megan’s Munchkins by Pamela Foland

Megan’s Munchkins by Pamela Foland

Main points This book was really cute and heartwarming. It was also quite accurate. I just did tons of research myself on raising newborn kittens, because I want to foster someday, and it matches up pretty well with what Megan does in the book. It surprised me how much she already knew about it. Even before doing the bulk of her research, she knew to bottle-feed them with powder formula/water and thought of an eyedropper when they wouldn’t take the bottle. Especially at thirteen, I would have no idea how to begin taking care of […]

The Wyrm King by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Wyrm King by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Posted on September 10, 2017 in Book Review / 0 Comments

Main points This book was good! It was a sort of mixture between the first two books. In the beginning, everyone was mad at each other again, and that lasted a while. Things were super depressing. Their parents didn’t blame them for running around and stealing cars and being shifty—they blamed themselves and went into counselling. Things took a dark turn there. But again, there were bigger problems at hand. Things slowly got better, the Grace siblings came to help, and plans were put into action. There were so many little plots going on that […]

A Giant Problem by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

A Giant Problem by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Main points Wow! Never have I had so fast a turnaround in a book series. The first book was not really fun and everyone was arguing but this book was great. It had all the fun of the original series. People did in fact get their crap together and start working as a team. They realised they couldn’t fight the giants on their own so Laurie gave Jules the Sight and he took it rather well. Then they brought Cindy into it and became a team. And there were elaborate schemes and plans. I love […]

The Nixie’s Song by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Nixie’s Song by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Posted on September 8, 2017 in Book Review / 0 Comments

Main points The Nixie’s Song: The book in which everyone makes a conscious decision to be a jerk. There’s a lot going on here. I would have to say that Nick and Laurie’s situation is even worse than the Grace siblings’. Nick’s mom is dead, and his dad married Laurie’s mom, and Nick and Laurie hate each other. They fight much worse. What’s funny is that they start off being civil, but then slowly grow to hate each other the more they have to deal with faeries. I think the opposite happens with the Grace […]

The Wrath of Mulgarath by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Wrath of Mulgarath by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Main points Minor spoilers ahead! This is the book where it all ends. For now. It’s a fine ending. This book does seem busier than the ones before it, and this is often the case when you need to wrap up a story. It often takes more work than you anticipate, although it didn’t seem to be actually much longer. But I admit, Mulgarath was properly frightening and cruel. The fight was too short, though. This is because they knew they couldn’t beat him in strength. It is rather sad, though—the reason he wasn’t able […]

The Ironwood Tree by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

The Ironwood Tree by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Posted on September 6, 2017 in Book Review / 0 Comments

Main points Minor spoilers ahead! This is the book in which things go very, very badly. In the last book things seemed calmer, and Jared wasn’t getting blamed as much, but here, the faeries finally goad him into something that causes his suspension from school. His mom is on the verge of sending him to live with his dad, who doesn’t want him. It’s very sad. Jared’s anger issues are also still quite out of control. The dynamic here gets a lot worse. But in this book, they have to face foes greater than before. […]
